INVESTIGATION

1. Drag the red point on the slope slider and observe the changes in the graph.

Define slope using your own words.

2. Drag the red point on the y-intercept slider and observe the changes in the graph.

Define y-intercept using your own words.

3. Click on the "Show Equation" button to display the equation of the line and observe how the equation changes as you change the slope and y-intercept values.

      a) Which part of the equation corresponds to the slope?

      b) Which part of the equation corresponds to the y-intercept?

4. Set the slope to a value of 2 and the y-intercept to a value of 1. Click on the "Show Triangle" button.

      a) What is the measure of the height of the triangle?

      b) What is the measure of the base of the triangle?

      c) What does the fraction height/base mean?

5. Click on the "Show All Triangles" button and observe the "stair steps" that are displayed.

      a) What do these triangles have in common?

      b) What happens to the stair steps as you change the slope?

      c) What happens to the stair steps as you change the y-intercept?

6. Set the slope to a value of -2 and the y-intercept to a value of 1. Click on "Show Triangle"

      a) How does this change the stair steps?

      b) Describe the direction of the line for a POSITVE slope.

      c) Describe the direction of the line for a NEGATIVE slope.
